December 02, 2002 Game 22: Devils Beat Flyers, 1-0 in OT!
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Flyers, 1-0 in OT in
Phildelphia on Monday, December 2, 2002. Martin Brodeur recorded
the 57th shutout of his career.
There was no scoring but plenty of action in the first
period. There were a lot of big hits, but the story of the period
was the altercation that took place near its' end.
Scott Niedermayer was hit from behind by Keith Primeau with
just 25 seconds left in the period. Luckily Niedermayer wasn't
seriously injured - if he had been the referees would have likely made the
correct call and thrown Primeau out of the game (with a boarding and a
misconduct). Instead, Niedermayer gave Primeau a "face wash", and
Colin White interceded. White held Primeau, while Niedermayer gave
Primeau a few punches to the mellon.
Primeau received Cross Checking and Roughing minors.
Niedermayer took a Roughing minor; but Colin White received a Game
Misconduct in addition to a Roughing minor. As a results, there
was no power-play for either team, but the Devils lost Colin White for
the remainder of the game.
The first period ended with the game tied, 0-0. The
Devils outshot the Flyers, 7-5 in the period.
The second period ended with the game still scoreless.
