The New Jersey Devils took a 3-2 Eastern Conference Finals series
lead with a game 5 win over the Rangers in New York on Wednesday, May 23,
Stephen Gionta gave the Devils an early 1-0 lead with a goal that
beat Queenie Lundqvist just 2:43 into the first period. Mark Fayne and
Steve Bernier assisted on Gionta's third goal of the playoffs.
Patrik Elias made it a two goal lead with a goal just 1:30 later.
Adam Henrique and Ilya Kovalchuk assisted on Elias' fourth goal of the
Travis made it a commanding 3-0 lead less than 10 minutes into
the game when he beat Lundqvist at 9:49. Zach Parise and Bryce Salvador
assisted on Zajac's seventh goal of the playoffs.
Brandon Prust got the Blue Skirts on the board with a goal that
beat Martin Brodeur at 15:41.
Ryan Callahan scored by kicking the puck past Martin Brodeur just
32 seconds into the second period. Toronto allowed the bogus goal to
Dan O'Halloran gave the Rangers a goal 17 seconds into the third
period when Martin Brodeur had the puck covered and Gaborik jammed at Marty
until the puck popped free and found it's way over the goal line.
Ryan Carter made it 4-3 New Jersey with a goal at 15:36.
Stephen Gionta and Marek Zidlicky assisted on Carter's third goal of the
Zach Parise added an empty-net goal with 32 seconds remaining
to make it a 5-3 win. Ilya Kovalchuk and Mark Fayne assisted on Parise's
seventh goal of the playoffs.
