The New Jersey Devils beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in a
shootout at the Prudential Center on Saturday, December 5, 2009.
Jamie Langenbrunner got the Devils on the board first with a goal
that beat Chris Osgood at 15:29 of the first period. Zach Parise and
Travis Zajac assisted on Langenbrunner's seventh goal of the season.
Johnny Oduya made a phenomenal play skating down the ice on a 3
on two in his first game back after injury. He took the puck all alone
and shot it past Osgood at 17:25 to give the Devils a 2-0 lead. Oduya's
first goal of the seasn was unassisted.
The first period ended with New Jersey leading, 2-0. The
Devils outshot the Red Wings 11-7 in the period.
Kris Draper put the puck behind Martin Brodeur at 9:23 of the
second period to cut the Devils lead to a single goal.
Rob Niedermayer scored at 14:43 to make it 3-1 New Jersey.
Vladimir Zharkov and Jay Pandolfo assisted on Niedermayer's third goal of the
With 30 seconds left in the second period, Tomas Holmstrom scored
on a power-play to again cut the Devils lead to a single goal.
The Red Wings outshot the Devils 11-9 in the second period, which
ended with the Devils leading 3-2.
Patrick Eaves tipped the puck past Martin Brodeur at 9:30 of the
third period to tie the game, 3-3.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, and neither team scored
in the overtime period to force the shootout.
