November 15, 2008Game 17: Devils Beat Capitals: 6-5 Shootout
The New Jersey Devils are skating at home against the Washington
Capitals at 7:00PM on Saturday, November 15, 2008.
David Clarkson gave the Devils an early lead with a goal that
beat Jose Theodore just 1:09 into the first period. John Madden and Jay
Pandolfo assisted on Clarkson's fourth goal of the season.
Tomas Fleischmann beat Scott Clemmensen on a power-play at 6:59.
Alexander Ovechkin gave the Caps a 2-1 lead with a goal at 19:09.
The first period ended with the Capitals leading 2-1. The
Devils outshot the Capitals 13-8 in the period.
41 seconds into the second period, Jamie Langenbrunner scored to
tie the game. Langenbrunner's third goal of the season was assisted by
Zach Parise and Travis Zajac.
Patrik Elias gave the Devils a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal at
3:27. Travis Zajac and Zach Parise assisted on Elias' sixth goal of the
Ex-Devil, Viktor Kozlov tied the game at 3 goals at 16:43.
The Capitals outshot the Devils 10-9 in the second period, which
ended with the score tied, 3-3.
Patrik Elias scored for the second time in the game at 6:06 of
the third period to give New Jersey a 4-3 lead. Travis Zajac was
credited with the only assist on the goal.
Niklas Backstrom tied the game with a goal at 8:11.
The Devils took a 5-4 lead with a goal from Brian Gionta at
11:40. Johnny Oduya and Patrik Elias assisted on Giontas third goal of
The Devils nearly had a regulation win, but with 1 second left on
the clock there was a mad scramble in front of Clemmensen, and Ovechkin took
the puck and put it in the net to force overtime.
The Devils outshot the Capitals 11-10 in the third period, and
were outshot by Washington 2-0 in the overtime. Neither time scored in
overtime, sending the game to a shootout. Clemmensen stopped all three
Washington shooters, and Zach Parise scored to give New Jersey the
