October 16, 2006 Game 5: Devils Fall to Rangers 4-2
The New Jersey Devils lost 4-2 to the Rangers in New York
on Monday, October 16, 2006. The loss drops the Devils record to 3-2.
There was no scoring and the Rangers outshot the Devils 14-12 in
the first period.
Aaron Ward beat Martin Brodeur at 8:24 of the first period to
give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
Just 35 seconds after Ward's goal Scott Gomez put the puck past
Henrik Lundqvist to tie the game, 1-1. Gomez's first goal of the season
was assisted by Brian Gionta and Alexander Brooks.
Brendan Shanahan blasted the puck past Brodeur at 18:29 on a
power-play to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead. Jason Ward added a
short-handed goal just 57 seconds later to increase the Rangers lead.
The Rangers outshot the Devils 12-9 in the second period, which
ended with the Rangers leading 3-1.
Travis Zajac beat Lundqvist 1:37 into the third period to get the
Devils back within one goal of the Rangers. Jamie Langenbrunner and Zach
Parise assisted on Zajac's second goal of the season.
Martin Straka beat Brodeur at 16:42 to give the Rangers a 4-2
lead.
The Devils outshot the Rangers 15-3 in the third period and
36-29 in the game.
