Game 37: Devils Destroy Capitals 7-2

    The New Jersey Devils smacked around the Washington Capitals at home, defeating them 7-2 on Wednesday, December 28, 2005.

    Alexander Ovechkin beat Martin Brodeur on the power-play at 9:44 of the first period to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead.

    Sergei Brylin beat Brent Johnson with a great shot at 12:40 to tie the game, 1-1.   Brylin's ninth goal of the season was assisted by Grant Marshall and Jamie Langenbrunner.

    Brian Rafalski added a power-play goal at 12:53 to give the Devils a 2-1 lead.   Paul Martin and Zach Parise assisted on Rafalski's second goal of the season.

    The first period ended with the Devils leading Washington, 2-1.   The Devils outhshot the Caps 11-10 in the period.

    Brian Gionta beat Olaf Kolzig (Johnson left with a groin injury) at 13:18 of the second period to give New Jersey a two goal lead.   Scott Gomez and Grant Marshall assisted on his 20th goal of the season.

    The second period ended with the Devils leading, 3-1.   The Devils outshot the Capitals 11-7 in the period.

    Jay Pandolfo beat Kolzig with a great top-shelf backhand shot at 6:47 of the third period to give the Devils a 4-1 lead.   Jamie Langenbrunner and Colin White assisted on Pandolfo's seventh goal of the season.

    Brian Sutherby scored on Martin Brodeur at 10:08 of the third period to cut the Devils lead to 2 goals.

    Brian Gionta scored his second goal of the night at 12:03 on a power-play to give the Devils a 5-2 lead.   Scott Gomez and Tommy Albelin assisted on Gionta's goal.

    John Madden increased the Devils lead just 1:00 later to give the Devils a 6-2 lead.   Brian Rafalski was credited with the only assist on Madden's seventh goal of the season.

    Brian Rafalski scored a 5 on 3 power-play goal with just 1:48 left to cap the Devils scoring.   Rafalski's second goal of the game was assisted by Paul Martin and Scott Gomez.

    The game ended with the Devils defeating the Caps, 7-2.   The Devils outshot the Capitals 16-8 in the period and 38-25 in the game.
