December 31, 2005 Game 39: Gomez Nets Hat Trick in Devils 6-3 Loss to Leafs
The New Jersey Devils lost 6-3 at home to the Toronto Maple Leafs
on Saturday, December 31, 2005.
Scott Gomez beat Eddie Belfour at 3:44 of the first period to
give the Devils an early lead. Zach Parise and Brian Gionta assisted on
Gomez's 12th goal of the season.
Mats Sundin tied the game with a short-handed goal that beat
Martin Brodeur at 9:02.
The Devils outshot the Leafs 9-3 in the first period, though the
scored was tied, 1-1.
Scott Gomez scored on a penalty shot at 1:27 of the second period
to give the Devils a 2-1 lead.
Mariusz Czerkawski scored at 7:26 to tie the game, 2-2.
Darcy Tucker beat Brodeur just 21 seconds later and Jeff O'Neill made it a
4-2 Toronto lead with a power-play goal at 9:46. Tomas Kaberle piled
on a fourth second period goal for the Leafs 14:06.
The Leafs outshot the Devils 15-7 in the second period, which
ended with Toronto leading, 5-2.
