February 14, 2004 Game 56: Devils Beat Hurricanes 4-1
The New Jersey Devils snapped their 3 game losing streak by
defeating the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 at home on Saturday, February 14,
2004.
Here are a few of my
pictures from the game.
Scott Gomez beat Kevin Weekes at 8:56 of the first period to give
New Jersey a 1-0 lead. Brian Gionta and Patrik Elias assisted on Gomez'
sixth goal of the season.
With 42 seconds remaining in the period, Brian Gionta put the
puck over Weekes to give the Devils a 2 goal lead. Scott Gomez and
Patrik Elias assisted on Gionta's 12th goal of the season.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Hurricanes,
2-0. The Devils outshot the Canes 13-8 in the period.
Jeff Friesen scored his 13th goal of the season at 13:08 of the
second period to make it a 3-0 Devils lead. Paul Martin and Brian
Rafalski assisted on the goal.
Martin Brodeur was falling asleep 14 minutes into the second
period - having not yet seen a shot from the Canes. He went behind his
net to play the puck, but it was taken along the boards by Jeff O'Neill and
shot into the open net at 14:22.
The Devils held the Hurricanes to that single shot in the second
period - and led 3-1 at the end of 40 minutes of play.
Mike Rupp beat Weekes 7:18 into the third period to give the
Devils a 4-1 lead. Erik Rasmussen and Grant Marshall assisted on Rupp's
sixth goal of the season.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 4-1. Carolina
outshot the Devils 6-3 in the third period, but were outshot 26-15 in the
game.
The Devils now lead the season series, 2-1. The teams will
meet once more in the regular season - on March 6 in Raleigh.
