January 03, 2004 Game 37: Devils Fall to Predators: 2-3, Late Goal Not Enough
The New Jersey Devils were defeated, 3-2 by the Predators in
Nashville, on Saturday, January 3, 2004. They are now winless in their
last three games.
David Legwand gave the Predators a 1-0 lead with a power-play
goal at 13:02 of the first period. The period ended with the Predators
leading the Devils, 1-0. The Predators outshot the Devils 13-7 in the
first.
Mark Eaton made it a 2-0 Predator lead beating Brodeur right off
a faceoff at 4:48 of the second period.
Patrik Elias got the Devils on the board at 9:46 of the second
period to cut the Predators lead to 2-1. Elias' 11th goal of the season
was assisted by Sergei Brylin and Jeff Friesen.
The second period ended with the Predators leading the Devils,
2-1. The Devils outshot the Predators 16-10, in the period.
5:20 into the third period, David Legwand scored again for the
Predators to increase their lead to two goals again.
With 23.3 seconds remaining in the third period, and Brodeur on
the bench, John Madden put the puck past Vokoun to make it a one goal game.
Madden's seventh goal of the season was assisted by Scott Niedermayer and
Brian Rafalski.
The late goal was not enough, the Devils were unable to score
again in the remaining seconds. The Predators defeated the Devils, 3-2.
The Devils outshot the Predators 17-4 in the third period and 40-27 in
the game.
The game was the only regular season meeting between the two
teams this season.
After playing only one game at home (and nine on the road) since
December 12, the Devils play the first game of a 3-game homestand on Monday,
January 5, against the Edmonton Oilers.
