October 28, 2004 Scott Gomez Now PAYS To Play Hockey
The Alaska Aces announced that they had signed locked out New
Jersey Devils center, Scott Gomez to an ECHL contract for the 2004-2005 season
on Monday, October 25, 2004. Gomez turned down more lucrative offers to
play in Europe and Russia, opting to play for his hometown team.
The Aces will pay Gomez a salary of $500 per week -- a mere
fraction of his Devils Salary ($1 million for 2003-2004 & contracted for $2.9
million for 2004-2005). However, that is just part of the financial
story. The ECHL requires NHL players to pay for disability/career-ending
insurance -- which Gomez did -- $25,000 for the policy. Add it up, and
that $500 paycheck won't even pay for the insurance policy.
