April 02, 2004 Jennings Trophy All But Secured
Martin Brodeur, with the help of Corey Schwab (3GP) and Scott
Clemmensen (4GP) have all but been handed the NHL's Jennings Trophy.
The William M. Jennings Trophy was first awarded after the
1981-1982 season was completed. It is awarded to the goaltenders (who
have played a minimum of 25 games with their team), of the team having the
fewest goals scored against.
The Devils have won the award 3 times in their history. In
1996-1997, Mike Dunham shared the award with Martin Brodeur; In 1997-1998,
Martin Brodeur claimed the trophy alone; and in 2002-2003 Martin Brodeur shared
the award with Philadelphia netminders Roman Cechmanek and Robert Esche.
This season, with two games remaining, The Devils have let up 159
goals - 10 less than their nearest competitor, Dallas with 169. New
Jersey would have to let up 10 more goals than Dallas does in their final 2
games, to "lose" the trophy.
