January 10, 2004 Game 41: Devils Beat Maple Leafs: 1-0
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Maple Leafs, 1-0, in Toronto
on Saturday, January 10, 2004. The shutout was Martin Brodeur's 9th of
the season, and the 73rd of his career.
Rob Skrlac finally managed to get someone to fight him (he had
made several attempts in his prior appearances), just 3:00 into the first
period. Skrlac and Nathan Perrott squared off right off the faceoff, as
soon as the puck dropped.
Brian Gionta took a rebound and lifted the puck over Ed Belfour
at 19:03 of the first period. Scott Niedermayer and Jay Pandolfo
assisted on Gionta's eighth goal of the season.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Maple Leafs,
1-0. The Devils outshot the Leafs, 11-7 in the period.
There was no scoring in the second period. The Devils
outshot the Leafs, 13-11 in the period.
There was no scoring in the third period, Gionta's first period
goal stood as the game winner. The Devils outshot the Leafs 9-7 in the
third period and 33-25 in the game.
The Devils now lead the season series, 1-0-2. The teams
will meet once more in the regular season.
Scott Stevens remained sidelined with the flu, and Igor Larionov
was also out of the lineup. Mike Rupp returned to fill the spot vacant
with Larionov out.
