December 21, 2003 Game 32 Devils & Blackhawks Knot Things, 2-2
The New Jersey Devils skated to a 2-2 tie against the Blackhawks
in Chicago, on Sunday, December 21, 2003.
There was no scoring in the first period, though the Blackhawks
outshot the Devils 10-5.
Scott Gomez beat Hawks netminder Michael Leighton 9:15 into the
second period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Scott Stevens recorded the
only assist on Gomez's fourth goal of the season.
The horn sounded for the end of the second period, with the
Devils leading Chicago 1-0. The Devils outshot the Blackhawks 12-7 in
the period.
Burke Henry beat Martin Brodeur just 3:34 into the third period
to tie the game, 1-1.
Scott Stevens put the puck past Leighton at 14:17 of the third
period to make it a 2-1 Devils lead. Scott Gomez assisted on Stevens'
third goal of the season.
Ville Nieminen evened the score with just 3:39 remaining in
regulation time.
Neither team managed to score in the remaining regulation time,
nor were they able to in the 5 minute over-time period. The game ended
with the teams tied, 2-2. The Blackhawks outshot the Devils 34-29 in
the game.
The game was the first matchup between the teams this season --
they will meet again on March 11, 2004 in New Jersey.
