October 16, 2003Game 3: Banner Raised: Devils & Leafs Tie 2-2
The New Jersey Devils raised their 2003 Stanley Cup Championship
banner in front of a sellout crowd before their 2003-2004 season home opener
on Thursday, October 16, 2003. The game against the Toronto Maple Leafs
nearly ended with a Toronto victory, but Sergei Brylin's heroics with 2 seconds
left in the third period, forced overtime.
Here are a few of my pictures
from the game.
Jay Pandolfo got the Devils on the board with his first goal of
the season, just 4:48 into the first period. Brian Rafalski recorded the
only assist on the goal.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Maple Leafs,
1-0. The Devils outshot the Leafs 15-3 in the period.
Nik Antropov tied the game by beating Brodeur at 10:40 of the
second period. 6:06 later, Darcy Tucker gave the Leafs their first lead
of the game.
The second period ended with the Maple Leafs leading the Devils, 2-1.
The Leafs outshot the Devils 10-6 in the period.
With just 2 seconds remaining in regulation time and Martin
Brodeur on the Devils bench, Sergei Brylin beat Ed Belfour to tie the game and
force overtime. The goal was Brylin's 2nd of the season and was assisted
by Patrik Elias and Brian Rafalski. The Devils outshot the Leafs 8-1 in
the third period.
There was no scoring in the 5 minute overtime period, the game
ended in a 2-2 tie. The Devils outshot the Leafs 4-0 in the OT period,
and 33-14 in the game.
Scott Stevens skated in his 1,600th career NHL game.
All fans in attendance received a replica 2002-2003 Stanley Cup
