January 11, 2003 Game 41: Devils Settle for 3-3 Tie with Lightning
The New Jersey Devils skated to a 3-3 tie in Tampa against the
Lightning on Saturday, January 11, 2003. The Devils had a 3-0 lead, but
allowed the Lightning to score 3 unanswered goals.
Jeff Friesen put the puck past Nikolai Khabibulin at 10:46 of the
first period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Jim McKenzie and Scott Gomez
assisted on Friesen's 8th goal of the season.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Lightning,
1-0. The Devils outshot the Lightning, 15-5 in the period.
Scott Gomez made a fantastic pass to Patrik Elias who buried the
puck at 2:39 of the second period on the power-play. Brian Rafalski also
assisted on Elias's 10th goal of the season.
Jim McKenzie put the puck past Khabibulin with a rocket of a shot
from the point just 25 seconds after Elias's goal. Christian Berglund
and Tommy Albelin assisted on McKenzie's 2nd goal of the season.
The Lightning pulled Khabibulin after the Devils took the 3-0
lead. Kevin Hodson relieved him in net for Tampa Bay at 3:04.
Chris Dingman, in an effort to fire up his team, engaged Turner
Stevenson in a fight 37 seconds after the Devils took a 3 goal lead.
After the fighting majors were assessed, the puck dropped. Andre Roy
decided the previous fight was not enough. Jim McKenzie was happy to
oblige for a second battle..
Pavel Kubina beat Brodeur after a Devils defensive breakdown at
5:25 of the second period to cut the Devils lead to 2 goals.
Cory Sarich scored just 8 seconds after an interference penalty
on Scott Niedermayer expired, at 15:18, to cut the Devils lead to 3-2.
Joe Nieuwendyk was struck in the face with the puck when Jamie
Langenbrunner was trying to clear the zone. He went to the dressing room
for stitches after the incident.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Lightning,
3-2. Tampa Bay outshot New Jersey 12-6 in the period.
Khabibulin returned at the start of the third period to guard the
net for Tampa Bay.
Martin St. Louis tied the game at 8:10 of the third period, on
the power-play.
Joe Nieuwendyk returned to the Devils bench about half way
through the third period. He was fitted with fresh stitches and
additional protection on his helmut for his ear.
The third period ended with the game tied, 3-3. The Devils
outshot the Lightning 10-5 in the third.
The overtime period ended with the game still tied, 3-3.
The Lightning outshot the Devils 3-1 in overtime, but were outshot 32-25 in
the game.
The Devils lead the lifetime series, 30-10-6-0. The season
series is tied, 1-1-1-0. The teams will meet once more this season in
March.
Oleg Tverdovsky (illness) and Brian Gionta (foot) were the Devils
scratches.
