April 24, 2003 Round 2 Game 1: Devils Tear Down Wall: Win, 3-0
The New Jersey Devils demolished the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-0, at
home on Thursday, April 24, 2003. The shutout was the third for Martin
Brodeur in this years playoffs.
There was no scoring in a cautiously played first period.
The Devils outshot the Lightning, 6-4 in the period.
There were no goals scored in the second period, though the
Devils thoroughly outplayed the Lightning, outshooting them, 15-3.
Jamie Langenbrunner lit the lamp for the Devils, beating Nikolai
Khabibulin at 7:41 of the third period. Langenbrunner's 6th goal of the
playoffs was assisted by Jay Pandolfo and Scott Stevens.
John Madden made it a 2-0 lead at 11:28 of the third, with his
3rd goal of the playoffs. Jamie Langenbrunner and Scott Stevens assisted
on the goal.
Turner Stevenson sealed the win with a great backhand shot that
beat Khabibulin with just 2:51 remaining in the third period. Patrik
Elias and Scott Gomez assisted on Stevenson's 1st goal of the playoffs.
The third period ended with the Devils defeating the Lightning,
3-0. The Devils outhsot Tampa Bay, 11-8 in the third period, and 32-15
in the game.
Brian Rafalski missed the game, with the flu. Tommy
Albelin took his place in the lineup and played a solid game. Sergei
Brylin also returned to the Devils lineup after about 10 weeks with a broken
wrist.
