December 23, 2002 Game 32: Devils & Rangers Tie 2-2!
The New Jersey Devils and the Rangers skated to a 2-2 tie in
New York on Monday, December 23, 2002.
Patrik Elias got his first goal in 14 games at 14:33 to give the
Devils a 1-0 lead. Elias's 7th goal of the season was assisted by
Brian Rafalski.
Joel Bouchard tied the game for the Rangers just 57 seconds after
Elias's goal.
The first period ended with the Devils on a 5-3 power-play, but
the score remained 1-1. The Devils outshot the Rangers 15-10 in the
period.
Scott put the puck past Dunham at 3:03 of the second period to
give the Devils a 2-1 lead. Gomez's 5th goal of the season was assisted
by Turner Stevenson and Brian Rafalski.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Rangers,
2-1. The Devils outshot the Rangers 14-8 in the period.
Richard Litner tied the game on the power-play at 12:09 of the
third period.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 2-2. The
Rangers outshot the Devils 9-7 in the third period.
The overtime period ended with the game tied, 2-2. The
Devils outshot the Rangers, 6-1 in the overtime and 42-28 in the game.
The game was Bobby Holik's first regular season game as a Ranger
against the Devils.
Number 23, Scott Gomez, recorded his 200th career NHL point on
his 23rd birthday, with his goal in the second period.
In their first meeting of the season, on November 21, the teams
skated to a 4-4 tie. The teams will meet 3 more times in the regular
season, 2/25/03, 3/15/03, and 4/4/03.
Oleg Tverdovsky (sick) and Christian Berglund (healthy) were
the scratches for the Devils.
