December 10, 2002 Game 26: Devils Shutdown Blues, 2-0!
The New Jersey Devils shutdown the St. Louis Blues, 2-0, in
New Jersey on Tuesday, December 10, 2002. Martin Brodeur recorded
his 3rd shutout of the season and the 58th of his career.
Jim McKenzie took a rebound and beat Fred Brathwaite at
13:14 of the first period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. McKenzie's
1st goal of the season was assisted by Brian Gionta.
The first period ended with the Devils leading, 1-0.
The Devils outshot the Blues 10-8 in the period.
10:52 into the second period, the Devils took a 2-0 lead
when Turner Stevenson smacked a rebound past Brathwaite. Stevenson's
3rd goal of the season was assisted by Sergei Brylin and Joe Nieuwendyk.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Blues,
2-0. The shots were even, 13-13 in the period.
There was no scoring in the third period, the Devils won the
game, 2-0. The Blues outshot the Devils 7-6 in the period, though
the shots were even, 28-28 in the game.
The Devils held their annual "Toys for Tots" drive at the
Continental Airlines Arena. Fans who attended the game, were asked
to bring a new, unwrapped toy for donation. All attendees who made
a donation were eligible to win autographed Devils' memorabilia.
In their previous meeting this season, the Devils defeated
the Blues, 5-4 in overtime, on November 30. The Devils now lead the
lifetime series, 58-48-13-0.
Brian Rafalski (bruised ribs) and Christian Berglund (healthy)
were the Devils scratches.
As a precautionary measure, the Devils called up Scott
Clemmensen for the game, because Corey Schwab was out with a viral
infection.
