November 19, 2002 Game 16: Devils beat Sabres, 4-3 in OT!
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Buffalo Sabres, 4-3, in
overtime in New Jersey on Tuesday, November 19, 2002.
Curtis Brown gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead 9:43 into the first
period on a 5 on 3 power-play.
The first period ended with the Sabres leading the Devils,
1-0. The shots were even, 8-8, in the period.
Chris Gratton beat Brodeur on the power-play at 12:51 of the
second period to give the Sabres a 2-0 lead.
The second period ended with the Sabres leading the Devils,
2-0. The Sabres also outshot the Devils 14-9 in the period.
Oleg Tverdovsky got the Devils on the board at 2:52 of the
third period on the power-play to get the Devils within one goal.
Scott Niedermayer and Sergei Brylin got assists on Tverdovsky's
first goal of the season.
John Madden got a breakaway after leaving the penalty box
and was able to beat Ryan Miller at 9:35 of the second period to tie the
game, 2-2. Jeff Friesen got the only assist on Madden's sixth goal
of the season.
Jeff Friesen beat Miller at 10:41 of the third to give the
Devils their first lead of the game. Friesen's third goal of the
season was assisted by Craig Darby (his first as a Devil) and Scott
Gomez.
J.P. Dumont tied the game at 14:50 of the third.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 3-3. The
Sabres outshot the Devils 12-6 in the third period.
Scott Niedermayer got the game winning goal 1:23 into the
overtime. Brian Rafalski and Joe Nieuwendyk got assists on
Niedermayer's first goal of the season. The Devils are now 3-0 in
overtime this season.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 4-3. The
Devils outshot the Sabres 2-0 in the overtime, but were outshot 34-25 in
the game.
The Sabres had 7 power-play opportunities in the game, with
the Devils only getting 2.
Craig Darby who was recalled from Albany on Monday, made
his Devils debut, with Jamie Langenbrunner out with a viral illness.
Ryan Miller started his first NHL game, in net for the
Sabres, while Martin Brodeur started his 16th straight game for the
Devils.
The Devils now trail 27-32-11-0 in the lifetime series but
are 15-15-6-0 at home.
With this loss the Sabres are now winless (0-9-2-1) in
their last 12 games.
