October 05, 2002 Pre-Season Game 8: Islanders Beat Devils 3-1
The Devils were defeated at home by the Islanders, 3-1 in
their final pre-season game on Saturday, October 5, 2002. They
end the pre-season with a .500 record (3-3-2-0).
Jim McKenzie and Eric Godard fought and took five
minute penalties 7:13 into the first period.
Colin White gave the Islanders a Power-Play, when at 7:40
he took an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty for dropping his gloves
without successfully getting Steve Webb to drop his.
Raffi Torres beat Brodeur at 12:32 of the first period to
give the Islanders a 1-0 lead.
Jason Wiemer gave the Isles a 2-0 lead with 2:13 remaining
in the first.
Colin White tried to engage Webb again at 18:24 of the
first, after taking a roughing penalty. He dropped his gloves
again, but Webb would not. He was lucky only to receive the
original roughing call.
The first period ended with the Islanders leading the
Devils, 2-0. The Isles outshot the Devils, 8-5 in the period.
Kenny Jonsson gave the Islanders a 3-0 lead at 10:50 of
the second period.
The second period ended with the Islanders leading 3-0.
The Islanders outshot the Devils 12-8 in the second.
Joe Nieuwendyk got the Devils on the board at 5:13 of
the third period, cutting the Islanders lead to two goals.
Nieuwendyk's goal was assisted by Patrik Elias.
The Devils outshot the Islanders 14-2 in the third period,
but were unable to put more than the Nieuwendyk goal past Osgood.
The game ended with the Islanders winning, 3-1. The Devils
outshot the Islanders 27-26 in the game.
Joe Nieuwendyk had 5 shots in the third period and led
all skaters with 7 in the game. Oleg Tverdovsky was on the ice
for all 3 Islander goals.
Neither team was successful on the power-play, the Devils
were 0-2 and the Devils were 0-4 with the man advantage. The
Devils won 53% of the faceoffs in the game.
Sergei Brylin wore the "C" for the Devils as Scott Stevens
was being rested. Scott Niedermayer and Joe Nieuwendyk wore "A"s.
Announced Attendance for the game was 10,132.
