The New Jersey Devils defeated the Boston Bruins 3-2 in
overtime at home on Sunday, April 7, 2002.
Ex-Devil Bill Guerin beat Martin Brodeur just 28 seconds into
the first period to give the Bruins an early 1-0 lead.
Petr Sykora beat John Grahame at 10:25 of the first period on
the power-play to tie the game, 1-1. Sykora's 19th goal of the season
was assisted by Joe Nieuwendyk and Jim McKenzie.
Bill Guerin got his second goal of the period at 13:57 on
the power-play to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead.
The first period ended with the Bruins leading the Devils,
2-1. The Devils outshot the Bruins 11-6 and won 8 of 19 faceoffs
in the period.
The second period was much slower paced than the first, and
there was no scoring. Scott Niedermayer leveled the Bruins' Jamie
Rivers along the boards in the period.
The second period ended with the Bruins leading the Devils,
2-1. The Bruins outshot the Devils 9-4 and won 57% of the faceoffs
in the period.
Sykora got his second goal of the game just 46 seconds into
the third period to tie the game, 2-2. Sykora's 20th goal of the
season was assisted by Sergei Brylin and Bobby Holik.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 2-2. The
Devils outshot the Bruins 9-8 in the third period.
Scott Niedermayer beat Grahame with a nice move 3:17 into
the overtime period to win the game for the Devils, 3-2. Joe
Nieuwendyk and Patrik Elias got assists on Niedermayer's 10th goal of the
season. This was Niedermayer's 3rd overtime goal this season, he now
leads the league in OT goals this season.
The Devils outshot the Bruins 25-24 and won 51% of the
faceoffs in the game. The Devils were 1 for 2 on the power-play
and Boston was 1 for 4 with the man-advantage.
Andrei Zyuzin, Andreas Salomonsson, and Stephane Richer
were healthy scratches for the Devils.
