Devils Defeat Panthers, 3-1
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Florida Panthers at home, 3-1 on Monday, March 25, 2002.
The Devils are playing the Florida Panthers at home - the game is being broadcast on the Metro channel.
Jim McKenzie fought Rocky Thompson at 3:32 and Peter Worrell at 17:42 of the first period.   He may have won the first fight, but the fight with Worrell was brief and had no clear victor.   Florida leads the league in fighting majors and in overall penalty minutes - by a wide margin.
There was no scoring in the first period.   The Devils outshot the Panthers 15-3 in the period.
Patrik Elias drew Trevor Kidd way out of his crease, walked past him and easily tucked the puck into the net.   Elias's 24th goal of the season came just 27 seconds into the second period on the power-play.   Joe Nieuwendyk got the only assist on the goal that gave the Devils a 1-0 lead.
Brad Ference blatantly and viciously cross-checked Jim McKenzie straight to the mouth at the 7:00 mark of the second period.   Ference was assesed a double-minor penalty - though his stick-work was clearly an attempt to injure - and should have been penalized as such.
Just 15 seconds into the resulting Devils four-minute power-play, Ivan Novoseltsev scored shorthanded for the Panthers.   The remaining 3:45 of the Devils power-play was rather weak for the team with the man advantage.
The second period ended with the game tied, 2-2.   The Devils outshot the Panthers 12-10 in the period.
Jamie Langenbrunner scored for the Devils just 18 seconds into the third period.   Langenbrunner's 12th goal of the season (his 2nd as a Devil) was assisted by Patrik Elias and Joe Nieuwendyk.
John Madden scored for the Devils with 30 seconds left in the third period.   Madden's 11th goal of the season was assisted by Jay Pandolfo and Scott Stevens.
The game ended with the Devils defeating the Florida Panthers, 3-1.   The Devils outshot the Panthers 10-2 in the third period and 37-15 in the game.
Bobby Holik was suspended for one game for a 'highsticking' incident involving Rod Brind'Amour on Saturday, and was out of the lineup.   Petr Sykora was also out because he is still recovering from the effects of the flu.
With Bobby Holik out of the lineup, Sergei Brylin wore an 'A' (Alternate Captain) for the Devils.
Including this win, Brodeur is now 16-0-3 against Florida since April 9, 1997.
