The New Jersey Devils defeated the Blackhawks, 3-1 in
Chicago on Wednesday, March 20, 2002.
Sergei Brylin had a penalty shot at 4:14 of the first
period. He made a good move, but was unable to beat Thibault.
Colin White got his second goal of the season at 5:10 of
the first period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. The goal was
assisted by Stephane Richer and Joe Nieuwendyk.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Blackhawks
1-0. The Devils outshot the Blackhawks 12-4 in the period.
John Madden scored for the Devils at 2:34 of the second
period to give the Devils a 2-0 lead. Madden's 10th goal of the
season was assisted by Jay Pandolfo and Brian Gionta.
Thibault was pulled from goal after the Madden goal and
was replaced by Steve Passmore.
Alex Zhamnov beat Vanbiesbrouck at 10:25 of the second
period to cut the Devils lead to one goal.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the
Blackhawks, 2-1. Chicago outshot New Jersey 9-8 in the period.
Bobby Holik beat Steve Passmore at 13:38 of the third period
to give the Devils a 3-1 lead. Scott Gomez got the only assist on
Holik's 20th goal of the season.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 3-1. The
shots were 9-9 in the third period, but the Devils outshot the Blackhawks,
29-23 in the game.

idle NY Islanders. Montreal defeated Florida tonight, allowing
them to pull two more points ahead of the NY Rangers.
