December 21, 2002 Game 31: Devils Defeat Stars, 5-3 - Langenbrunner Shines
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Dallas Stars, 5-3 in New
Jersey on Saturday, December 21, 2002.
Jamie Langenbrunner scored on his former team at 5:21 of the
first period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Langenbrunner's 9th goal of
the season was assisted by Brian Rafalski and Scott Stevens.
The Devils had 1:22 of 5 on 3 power-play time shortly after the
Langenbrunner goal, but were unable to capitalize.
Oleg Tverdovsky gave the Devils a 2-0 lead at 12:22 of the first
period, beating Marty Turco with a nice shot. Jamie Langenbrunner and
Ken Daneyko assisted on Tverdovsky's 4th goal of the season.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Stars, 2-0.
The Devils outshot the Stars, 11-6 in the period.
Manny Malhotra cut the Devils lead in half 1:12 into the second
period, buy sneaking the puck past Brodeur's left leg.
Ex-Devil, Bill Guerin tied the game, 2-2 at 10:14 of the second
period, beating Brodeur after Colin White's stick was chopped in half by a
Dallas Star player.
Jeff Friesen regained the lead for the Devils by stashing the
puck into an empty net just 66 seconds after Guerin's goal. Turco had
left the net to play the puck, but gave it away to Patrik Elias. Elias
got the only assist on Friesen's 7th goal of the season.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Stars, 3-2.
