March 29, 2002 Capitals Defeat Devils at Home, 3-1
The New Jersey Devils were defeated at home by the Washington
Capitals 3-1, on Friday, March 29, 2002.
Kevin Constantine put Patrik Elias and Petr Sykora on a
line with Joe Nieuwendyk - which was anticipated by many when the trade
happened. The line combination did not happen sooner because both
Elias and Sykora had been ill with the flu.
Patrik Elias gave the Devils a 1-0 lead at 10:01 of the
first period by beating Olaf Kolzig with a nice shot. Elias's 26th
goal of the season was assisted by Petr Sykora.
Andrei Nikolishin beat John Vanbiesbrouck at 14:37 of the
first period to tie the game, 1-1.
The first period ended with the game tied.   Shots were
also tied, 7-7 in the period.
Ken Daneyko had an excellent opportunity to end his goal
scoring drought just 40 seconds into the second period, but failed to put
the puck past Kolzig.
There was no scoring in the second period - each team had a
single 2 minute power-play, but was unable to convert. The Devils
