October 06, 2001 Capitals Crush Devils, 6-1
The New Jersey Devils season opener on Saturday,
October 6, 2001 was away, against the Washington Capitals.
They were defeated by a score of 6-1.
The Devils lineup was missing several of the 'regulars'
from last year. Alexander Mogilny is now a Maple Leaf; Ken
Sutton is now an Islander; Sean O'Donnell is now a Bruin; and John
Vanbiesbrouck has retired. Scott Niedermayer is out with back
problems; Brian Rafalski is out with a lingering groin injury; Randy
McKay is out with a Rib injury; and Sergei Nemchinov is on the Injured
Reserve list with an unspecified injury.
Scott Clemmensen is currently in the lineup as Martin
Brodeur's backup. Salomonsson, Bicek, and Dagenais are playing
forward positions.. Josef Boumedienne, Sasha Goc, and Tommy
Albelin are on defense..
The first period began with the Devils looking rather
solid. They played well and got the first goal of game.
Josef Boumedienne (a defenseman) scored his first career NHL goal and
the first Devils goal of the season at 15:19. Turner Stevenson
and John Madden got Assists on Boumedienne's nice slap shot.
Jeff Halpern beat Brodeur with a slap shot at 16:53
to tie the game, 1-1.
