May 29, 2001 Unlikely Heroes! Devils Win 2-1!
The New Jersey Devils rebounded to win Game 2 of the
Stanley Cup Finals in Denver, Tuesday night, May 29, 2001. The
Devils got goals from some "unlikely heros", Bob Corkum and Turner
Stevenson. Bob Corkum made his first ever Stanley Cup Finals
appearance to replace the injured Randy McKay.
The first period started off a little shaky for the Devils
as Marty Brodeur looked hurt after making a play, and the Devils found
themselves short-handed early. On the second Colorado power-play,
Joe Sakic scored at 5:58. Martin Brodeur thought he had the puck
and was way out of the net. Unfortunately the puck was loose and
Brodeur watched the puck get swatted into the empty net.
In what seemed to be uncertain Devils play, they were
undiscipled - taking two penalties in the first 5 minutes of the game,
and three before Colorado was called for anything. On the third
Devils penalty-kill (which was Elias retaliation slashing penalty), Bob
Corkum got a breakaway and beat Patrick Roy with a wrist shot one second
after the penalty expired.
The Corkum goal tied the game at 1, and killed Roy's
hopes to set a new Finals Shutout record. The goal came just 1:41
before the current record of 229:22. Thank you Bob, for not
letting Roy get higher on himslef by setting another record.
Turner Stevenson scored with a wrist shot, with assists
from Scott Niedermayer and Alexander Mogilny, at 17:20 to give the Devils
a 2-1 lead. This goal came just 3 seconds after a Devils power-
play expired.
Bobby Holik was called for slashing at 19:39, so 1:39 of
