January 22, 2013 Game 2: Devils Toss Flyers a 3-0 Beating
The New Jersey Devils won their home opener at the Prudential
Center, shutting out the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 on Tuesday, January 22,
2013. The shutout was career number 120 for Martin Brodeur.
Travis Zajac beat Ilya Bryzgalov just 1:07 into the first period
to give New Jersey the early lead. Zajac's second goal of the season
was assisted by Captain Bryce Salvador and Dainius Zubrus.
David Clarkson added a power-play goal with just 25 seconds
remaining in the first period to make it 2-0. Ilya Kovalchuk and Marek
Zidlicky assisted on Clarkson's second goal of the season.
2:44 into the second period, with the Devils on a penalty kill,
the Flyers severely wronged Ilya Kovalchuk on a breakaway and he was awarded
a penalty shot. Kovalchuk easily beat Bryzgalov for his first goal of
the season to make it a 3-0 Devils lead.
There were plenty of penalties assessed lated in the second and third
periods, but no additional goals were scored.
