Game 34: Devils Blow Lead, But Beat Caps in SO

    The New Jersey Devils defeated the Washington Capitals 4-3 at home in a shootout on Friday, December 23, 2011.

    Ilya Kovalchuk scored a power-play goal 2:20 into the second period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.   Kurtis Foster and Patrik Elias assisted on Kovalchuk's 11th goal of the season.

    Alexander Urbom scored his first goal of the season at 4:57 to give New Jersey a 2-0 lead.   Travis Zajac and Ilya Kovalchuck assisted on the goal.

    Adam Henrique tipped the puck past Michal Neuvirth at 10:08 of the second period to make it a 3 goal lead.   Matt Taormina and Zach Parise assisted on Henrique's ninth of the season.

    The Devils were on the offensive in the second period, with 14 shots resulting in 3 goals.   In the third period, the Devils moved into defensive mode.   Unfortunately defensive mistakes, and only 4 shots in the period, let Washington tie the game 3-3.

    The game remained tied after the overtime period, forcing a shootout.   Ilya Kovalchuk and Patrik Elias scored in the shootout, while Martin Brodeur stopped both shots he faced.
