Game 5: Devils Collapse. Lose 3-4 to Sharks in Shootout

The New Jersey Devils lost 3-4 in a shootout to the San Jose Sharks at the Prudential Center on Friday, October 21, 2011.

Patrik Elias beat Antti Niemi on a power-play at 13:53 of the first period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.   Ilya Kovalchuk and David Clarkson assisted on Elias' second goal of the season.

Just 36 into the second period, Zach Parise was assaulted on a short-handed attempt and awarded a penalty shot.   Parise made good on the attempt - scoring his third goal of the season.

Things looked up at the time of Parise's goal, but they quickly fell apart for New Jersey.   Joe Thornton (1000th game) and Ryane Clowe scored 1:03 apart - at 15:18 and 16:21 of the second period to tie the game 2-2.

David Clarkson scored at 13:18 of the third period to give the Devils a 3-2 lead.   Mattias Tedenby and Andy Greene assisted on Clarkson's second goal of the season.

Joe Pavelski tied the game with the Sharks' net empty at 19:27.

Neither team scored in overtime, forcing the shootout.   Ilya Kovalchuk scored for the Devils, but Niemi stopped Parise and Elias.   Hedberg was beat by Michal Handzus and Ryane Clowe.

Jacob Josefson left the game after checking himself hard into the boards.   It was later announced that he suffered a broken clavicle.

Eric Boulton and Douglas Murray squared off at 7:21 of the first period, and Boulton had a huge KO in that battle.
