The New Jersey Devils defeated the Florida Panthers 5-2 in Newark
on Sunday, January 23, 2011.
Ilya Kovalchuk tipped a blast from Andy Greene past Scott
Clemmensen at 4:20 of the first period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.
Kovalchuk's 14th goal of the season was also assisted by Travis Zajac.
With just 2 seconds remaining in the first period, Jason Arnott
scored to give the Devils a two goal lead. Adam Mair and Mark Fayne
assisted on Arnott's 11th goal of the season.
The Devils outshot the Panthers 8-7 in the first period, which
ended with New Jersey leading 2-0. Jacob Markstrom started the second
period in net for Florida.
Shawn Matthias beat Martin Brodeur at 7:22 of the second period
to get the Panthers on the board.
Brian Rolston scored a power-play goal at 12:48 to give the
Devils a 3-1 lead. Rolston's fifth goal of the season was assisted by
Ilya Kovalchuk and David Clarkson.
Patrik Elias added a power-play goal at 17:19 to make it a three
goal New Jersey lead. Brian Rolston and Ilya Kovalchuk assisted on
Elias' 13th goal of the season.
The Devils outshot the Panthers 9-7 in the second period.
Marty Reasoner scored at 5:56 of the third period to get Florida
back within two goals.
Jason Arnott added an empty net goal at 18:13 to seal the Devils
victory. Rod Plley and Henrik Tallinder assisted on Arnott's second goal
of the game.
