October 03, 2009 Game 1: Flyers Defeat Devils 5-2
The New Jersey Devils lost their 2009-2010 season opener at home,
2-5 to the Philadelphia Flyers on October 3, 2009.
The Devils were unable to capitalize on a full two minute 5 on 3
power-play mid-way through the first period. Jeff Carter beat Martin
Brodeur at 15:57 to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.
The first period ended with Philadelphia leading, 1-0. The
Flyers outshot the Devils 10-6 in the period.
Ian Laperriere gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead with a goal at 9:20 of
the second period. Mike Richards made it 3-0 with a goal at
15:23.
The Devils outshot the Flyers 13-8 in the second period, but were
unable to light the lamp. Philadelphia led 3-0 at the end of 40 minutes
of play.
Darroll Powe scored for Philadelphia at 7:34 of the third period
to make it a 4-0 lead.
Brian Rolston finally got the Devils on the board with a
power-play goal that beat Ray Emery at 9:44. Nicklas Bergfors and
Dainius Zubrus assisted on the first Devils goal of the season.
Matt Carle beat Brodeur at 11:13 to give the Flyers a 5-1
lead.
Jamie Langenbruner got the Devils back within 3 goals of
Philadelphia with a nice short-handed goal at 13:40. Dainius Zubrus
was credited with the only assist on Langenbrunner's first goal of the
season.
The Flyers outshot the Devils 10-7 in the third period and 28-26
in the game, which ended with the Flyers winning, 5-2.
The game was the 1000th of Martin Brodeur's career - only the
second goaltender to ever reach this milestone. The start was also
Brodeur's 15th straight season opener.
