April 19, 2009Round 1 Game 3: Devils BEAT Canes: 3-2 In Overtime
The New Jersey Devils skated to a 3-2 overtime win over the
Hurricanes in Raleigh to take a 2-1 series lead in first round of the playoffs
on Sunday, April 19, 2009.
Zach Parise gave the Devils a 1-0 lead with a goal that beat Cam
Ward at 6:04 of the first period. Paul Martin and Travis Zajac assisted
on Parise's third goal of the playoffs.
Ryan Bayda answered for Carolina with a goal just 29 seconds
later to tie the game, 1-1.
Brian Gionta scored an unassisted goal with just 9 seconds
remaining in the period to give the Devils a 2-1 lead.
The first period ended with New Jersey leading, 2-1. The
Devils outshot the Canes, 9-8 in the period.
Chad Larose beat Martin Brodeur just as a penalty expierd to tie
the game, 2-2 at 15:30 of the second period. The period ended with the
teams tied, 2-2. The Devils outshot the Hurricanes 13-9 in the
Travis Zajac scored his first NHL playoff goal at 4:58 of the
first overtime to win the game for New Jersey. Zach Parise and Colin
White assisted on the goal.
