April 15, 2009 Round 1 Game 1: Devils DEFEAT Hurricanes 4-1
The New Jersey Devils opened Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs
at home with a 4-1 win over Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday, April 15,
2009.
Mike Mottau beat Cam Ward at 16:03 of the first period to give
the Devils a 1-0 lead. Mottau's first goal of the playoffs was scored
unassisted.
The Devils outshot the Hurricanes 15-7 in the first period, which
ended with the Devils leading, 1-0.
The Devils took a 2 goal lead just 59 seconds into the second
period with a goal from Zach Parise. His first goal of the playoffs was
assisted by Travis Zajac and Jamie Langenbrunner.
Patrik Elias scored at 11:33 to make it a three goal lead.
Brian Gionta and Dainius Zubrus assisted on Elias' first goal of the post
season.
The second period came to a close with the Devils leading 3-0.
The Devils outshot the Canes 15-6 in the period.
Ray Whitney got the Hurricanes on the board with a goal that beat
Martin Brodeur at 9:22 of the third period.
Jamie Langenbrunner quickly answered with a goal just 29 seconds
later to make it 4-1 New Jersey. Zach Parise and Paul Martin assisted on
Langenbrunner's first goal of the playoffs.
