March 03, 2009Game 64: Devils BEAT Maple Leafs: 3-2 Overtime
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Maple Leafs 3-2 in overtime in
Toronto on Tuesday, March 3, 2009.
David Clarkson buried the puck just 3:30 into the first period
to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Mike Mottau and Colin White assisted on
Clarkson's 15th goal of the season.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Maple Leafs,
1-0. The Devils outshot the Leafs 11-9 in the period.
The Devils outshot the Leafs 17-5 in the second period, though
neither team scored in the middle frame.
John Mitchell beat Martin Brodeur 2:32 into the third period to
tie the game, 1-1.
Patrik Elias gave the Devils a 2-1 lead, with a power-play goal
that beat Vesa Toskala at 5:21. Jamie Langenbrunner and Paul Martin
assisted on Elias' 25th goal of the season.
Mitchell scored his second goal of the game, on a power-play at
10:45, to tie the game, 2-2.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, forcing
Johnny Oduya beat Toskala with just 12 seconds remaining in the
overtime period to win the game for New Jersey. Brian Gionta was
credited with the only assist on Oduya's eighth goal of the season.
