January 21, 2009Game 47: Devils Beat Canadiens 5-2
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Montreal Canadiens 5-2 at home
on Wednesday, January 21, 2009. The Devils take a 5 game winning streak
into the All-Star break.
Paul Martin left the penalty box at 11:45 and took a pass from
Patrik Elias down the ice on a breakaway. He beat Carey Price at 11:52
to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Martin's fourth goal of the season was
also assisted by John Madden.
The Devils outshot the Canadiens 12-9 and led 1-0 at the end of
the first period.
Travis Zajac gave New Jersey a 2-0 lead with a goal at 6:18 of
the second period. Zach Parise was credited with the only assist on
Zajac's 15th goal of the season.
Josh Georges beat Scott Clemmensen at 13:56 to cut the Devils lead
to a single goal.
Johnny Oduya increased the Devils lead with a goal at 18:20.
Paul Martin assisted on Oduya's fourth goal of the season.
The Devs outshot the Habs 15-13 in the second period, which ended
with the Devils leading 3-1.
Zach Parise scored unassisted 2:05 into the third period to make
it a 4-1 Devils lead. The goal was number 28 on the season for
Matt D'Agostini beat Clemmensen at 7:46 on a power play to cut
the Devils lead to two goals.
Patrik Elias put the final nail in the Habs coffin with a
short-handed empty net goal at 19:05. John Madden and Colin White
assisted on Elias' 20th goal of the season.
