December 21, 2008 Game 31: Devils Edge Flyers 3-2 in Shootout
The New Jersey Devils hung on to beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2
in a shootout in Newark on Sunday, December 19, 2008.
The first period was rather uneventful, with each team taking 10
shots, but burying none. The Devils had 3 missed power-play
opportunities in the period.
Patrik Elias extended his point streak to 10 games with a goal
that beat Antero Niittymaki at 7:30 of the second periodon a power-play.
Elias' 16th goal of the season was assisted by Zach Parise and Travis
Zajac.
Brian Rolston scored his third goal of the season at 1:06 after
Elias' goal to give New Jersey a 2-0 lead. David Clarkson and Bobby
Holik assisted on the goal.
Jeff Carter got the Flyers on the board with a power-play goal
that beat Scott Clemmensen at 17:18.
The shots were even, 9-9 in the second period, which ended with
the Devils leading, 2-1.
Joffrey Lupul tied the game at 15:16 of the third period.
Regulation time ended with the teams tied, 2-2. The Flyers
outshot the Devils 7-6 in the third period. Neither team scored in the
overtime period, forcing a shootout to decide the game.
