October 29, 2008Game 9: Maple Leafs Edge Devils 6-5 in Shootout
The New Jersey Devils lost 5-6 in a shootout at the Prudential
Center to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, October 29, 2008.
David Clarkson got the Devils on the board early with a goal that
beat Vesa Tosakala just 2:32 into the first period. Mike Mottau and Andy
Greene assisted on Clarkson's second goal of the season.
The Devils took a two goal lead with a goal from Dainius Zubrus
at 7:04. Zubrus' second goal of the season was assisted by Brian Gionta
and Andy Greene.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Maple Leafs,
2-0. Toronto outshot New Jersey 13-7 in the period.
Matt Stajan got Toronto on the board with a goal that beat Martin
Brodeur at 4:13 of the second period. Stajan added a power-play goal
just 1:18 later to tie the game, 2-2. Toronto took their first lead of
the game with a power-play goal from Alexander Steen at 7:31.
Jamie Langenbrunner tied the game, 3-3 with a goal at 9:14.
Langenbrunner's second goal of the season was assisted by Mike Mottau
and Andy Greene.
Colin White scored his first goal of the season at 13:42 to give
New Jersey a 4-3 lead. John Madden and Matt Halischuk assisted on the
goal. The assist for Halischuk was his first NHL point (in his first NHL
The Maple Leafs outshot the Devils 17-9 in the second period,
which ended with the Devils leading, 4-3.
Jamal Mayers knotted the teams again with a goal at 9:15 of the
third period. Alexei Ponikarovsky gave Toronto a 5-4 lead with a
power-play goal at 10:25.
The game was tied yet again with a goal from Zach Parise at
11:17. Paul Martin and Brian Gionta assisted on Parise's seventh goal of
Regulation time ended with the teams tied, 5-5. The Leafs
outshot the Devils 18-9 in the third period and 48-25 through 3 periods.
Neither team scored in the overtime period, sending the game to a
