April 18, 2008 R1 G5: Rangers Eliminate Devils with 5-3 Win
The New Jersey Devils playoff run ended with a 3-5 loss to the
New York Rangers at the Prudential Center on Friday, April 18, 2008.
Brian Gionta gave the Devils an early lead with a goal that beat
Henrik Lundqvist 4:40 into the first period. Travis Zajac and Dainius
Zubrus assisted on Gionta's first of the playoffs.
The Rangers were able to tie the game just 18 seconds later, with
a goal from Michal Rozsival. Jaromir Jagr added a power-play goal at
6:38 and Scott Gomez scored for New York at 18:01 to give the Rangers a two
goal lead.
The first period ended with the Rangers leading the Devils, 3-1.
The Devils oushot the Rangers 9-7 in the period.
Chris Drury made it a 4-1 Rangers lead with a goal that beat
Martin Brodeur at 5:35 of the second period.
Bryce Salvador scored for New Jersey at 9:26. Salvador's
first goal of the playoffs was scored unassisted.
Patrik Elias got the Devils back within one goal of the Rangers
with a power-play goal at 13:50. Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner
assisted on Elias' fourth goal of the series.
The Rangers led 4-3 at the end of the second period, in which
the Rangers outshot the Devils 13-6.
John Madden had an unsuccessful penalty shot at 12:52 of the
third period and Brandon Dubinsky scored an empty net goal for the Rangers at
19:00 of the third period, to seal the Devils fate.
