January 24, 2008 Game 49: Devils Collapse, Canadiens Rare Win in NJ 3-4
The New Jersey Devils allowed 3 unanswered goals to blow a 3-1
lead, letting the Montreal Canadiens have a rare win in New Jersey. The
Devils were outshot 20-3 in the third period and 32-13 in the 3-4 loss.
Patrik Elias got the Devils on the board with a power-play goal
at 12:18 of the first period. Mike Mottau was credited with the only
assist on Elias' 13th goal of the season.
The Devils outshot the Canadiens 6-3 in the first period and led
1-0.
Patrik Elias beat Cristobal Huet for a second time with a goal at
3:24 of the second period. Mike Mottau and Colin White assisted on the
goal.
Bryan Smolinski beat Martin Brodeur at 14:12 to get the Canadiens
within one goal of New Jersey.
Jamie Langenbrunner blasted the puck past Huet just 7 seconds
into a 5 on 3 power-play to give the Devils a 3-1 lead. Langenbrunner's
eighth goal of the season was assisted by Paul Martin and Brian Gionta.
The Canadiens outshot the Devils 9-4 in the second period, which
ended with the Devils leading 3-1.
Brian Smolinski scored his second goal of the game just 29
seconds into the third period to cut the Devils lead to 3-2. Saku Koivu
deflected a puck from up high to beat Brodeur at 11:54. The goal was
reviewed and though it seemed too high, it was allowed - tying the game,
3-3. Christopher Higgins added a power-play goal at 14:31 to give
Montreal their first lead of the game.
