October 12, 2006Game 3: Devils HUGE Rally, 7-6 Win Over Maple Leafs
Brian Gionta led an incredible rally that resulted in a 7-6 New
Jersey Devils shootout victory at home over the Toronto Maple Leafs on
Thursday, October 12, 2006.
Gionta scored 3 unanswered goals in the third period to tie the
game after the Devils had been down 6-3. Gionta also scored a goal in
the shootout. Madden added the winning shootout goal and had 2
regulation goals as well.
John Madden beat Jean-Sebastien Aubin at 10:43 of the first
period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Sergei Brylin and Jay Pandolfo
assisted on Madden's first goal of the season.
Jeff O'Neill beat Martin Brodeur on a power-play at 15:45 to tie
the game, 1-1. The first period ended with the game tied.
Matt Stajan beat Brodeur just 1:13 into the second period to give
the Leafs a 2-1 lead.
John Madden tied the game with his second goal of the game at
3:30. Cam Janssen was credited with the only assist on Madden's
Matt Stajan scored just 20 seconds after Madden's goal to re-gain
the lead for Toronto. Chad Kilger beat Brodeur just 48 seconds later
to increase the Leafs lead to 4-2.
Sergei Brylin got the Devils back within one with his first goal
of the season at 5:25 of the second period. Paul Martin and John Madden
assisted on Brylin's goal.
Darcy Tucker scored off a faceoff at 8:45 to give Toronto a 5-3
lead. Alexei Ponikarovsky beat Brodeur at 14:48, increasing the Leafs
lead to 3 goals.
The second period ended with the Maple Leafs leading the Devils,
6-3. The Leafs outshot the Devils 11-7 in the period.
Brian Gionta got the Devils back within 2 goals with a power-play
goal at 6:29 of the third period. Brian Rafalski and Patrik Elias
assisted on Gionta's first goal of the season.
Brian Gionta scored again at 14:19 on a power-play to give the
Devils hope. Gionta's second goal of the game was assisted by Scott
Gomez and Paul Martin.
Brian Gionta completed a natural hat trick to tie the game 6-6
with just 38 seconds remaining in regulation time. Scott Gomez and Jamie
Langenbrunner assisted on Gionta's goal.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 6-6. The Devils
outshot the Leafs, 10-4 in the third period. There was no scoring in the
five minute overtime period, forcing a shootout
