The New Jersey Devils tossed the Philadelphia Flyers a 5-1
beating in East Rutherford on Sunday, April 16, 2006. The win extends
the Devils streak to 10 straight.
The Devils are now tied with the Flyers with 99 points and are
1 point behind the Rangers for the division lead. The Devils would win
tie-breakers with both the Flyers and the Rangers.
Brian Gionta beat Robert Esche 5:56 into the first period to give
the Devils a 1-0 lead. Scott Gomez and Brian Rafalski assisted on
Gionta's 46th goal of the season.
Patrik Elias scored with just 46 seconds remaining in the first
period to increase the Devils lead. Brad Lukowich and Brian Rafalski
assisted on Elias' 14th goal of the season.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Flyers, 2-0.
The Flyers outshot the Devils 12-11 in the period.
Scott Gomez made it 3-0 Devils just 2:24 into the second period,
which led to Esche being replaced in net. Gomez's 33rd goal of the
season was assisted by Brian Gionta and Zach Parise.
Simon Gagne beat Martin Brodeur just 30 seconds later to get the
Flyers on the board.
Jamie Langenbrunner added a late goal to further pad the Devils
lead. Brad Lukowich and Patrik Elias assisted on Langenbrunner's 18th
goal of the season.
The second period ended with the Devils leading, 4-1. The
Flyers outshot the Devils 8-5 in the period.
Patrik Elias scored his second goal of the game at 11:01 of the
third period. Jamie Langenbrunner and Brad Lukowich assisted on Elias'
The Flyers outshot the Devils again in the third period, 6-4,
but the game ended with the Devils winning, 5-1.
