April 11, 2006 Game 79: Devils Beat Hurricanes: 4-3 In Overtime
The New Jersey Devils beat the Hurricanes 4-3 in overtime in
North Carolina on Tuesday, April 11, 2006. The win extends the Devils
streak to 8 straight, and clinches a playoff spot.
Grant Marshall beat Martin Gerber just 1:28 into the first period
to give the Devils an early 1-0 lead. John Madden and Jay Pandolfo
assisted on Marshall's eighth goal of the season.
Kevyn Adams put one past Martin Brodeur at 8:42 to tie the game,
1-1.
The first period ended with the game tied, 1-1. The Canes
outshot the Devils 12-10 in the period.
John Madden gave the Devils a 2-1 lead with his 16th goal of the
season at 17:39 of the second period. Grant Marshall and Paul Martin
assisted on the goal.
The Hurricanes outshot the Devils 10-9 in the second period,
which ended with the Devils leading, 2-1.
Mark Recchi tied the game with a goal at 8:17 of the third
period.
Jamie Langenbrunner put the puck behind Gerber at 15:33 of the
third period on a power-play to give New Jersey a 3-2 lead. Patrik Elias
and Brian Gionta assisted on Langenbrunner's 17th goal of the season.
Eric Staal tied the game with a shorthanded goal with just 46
seconds remaining in regulation time.
Brian Gionta scored 28 seconds into the overtime period on a
power-play to win the game, 4-3 for the Devils. Scott Gomez and Patrik
Elias assisted on Gionta's 45th goal of the season.
