March 28, 2006 Game 72: Devils Beat Senators: 3-2 Shootout Win
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Senators with a 3-2 shootout
win in Ottawa on Tuesday, March 28, 2006.
John Madden beat Ottawa netminder Ray Emery at 13:26 of the first
period on a shorthanded breakaway to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.
The first period ended with NJ leading 1-0. The Devils
outshot the Senators 12-7 in the period.
The Senators outshot the Devils 13-8 in the second period, but
neither team was able to score.
Dany Heatley tied the game with a power-play goal that beat
Martin Brodeur 3:41 into the third period.
Brian Gionta beat Emery on a power-play at 6:14. Gionta's
goal was his 40th of the season and was unassisted.
Dany Heatley scored his second goal of the game with just 31
seconds left in the third period to tie the game.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 2-2, forcing overtime.
The shots were even 12-12 in the third period.
Niether team was able to score in the overtime. Scott
Gomez scored the only goal in the shootout, to win the game for the
Devils.
