February 04, 2006 Game 55: Devils Fall To Maple Leafs 4-2
The New Jersey Devils lost, 4-2 to the Maple Leafs in Toronto
on Saturday, February 4, 2006. The Devils rallied late, but a Toronto
empty net goal sealed their fate.
The Maple Leafs took an early lead when Alexei Ponikarovsky beat
Martin Brodeur just 33 seconds into the first period. Tomas Kaberle made
it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 9:59 and Ponikarovsky increased their lead
with his second goal of the period just 1:13 later.
The first period ended with the Leafs leading the Devils, 3-0.
The Devils outshot Toronto 11-8 in the period.
Viktor Kozlov was unable to beat Eddie Belfour on a penalty shot
attempt in the second period - which ended with the score still 3-0 Maple
Leafs. The Devils outshot the Leafs 14-6 in the second.
Brian Gionta got the Devils on the board with a power-play goal
just 28 seconds into the third period. Jamie Langenbrunner and Brian
Rafalski assisted on Gionta's 31st goal of the season.
John Madden gave the Devils hope, getting them to within one goal
of Toronto when he beat Belfour just 35 seconds after Gionta's goal (1:03 of
the third period). Madden's ninth goal of the season was assisted by
Jamie Langenbrunner and David Hale.
Chad Kilger spoiled the Devils comeback hopes with an empty net
goal at the 19:15 mark of the third period.
The game ended with Toronto defeated New Jersey, 4-2. The
Devils outshot the Leafs 13-5 in the third period and 38-19 in the game.
