March 23, 2004Game 76: Devils Beat Panthers: 4-3 in OT, Marty Gets 400
The New Jersey Devils beat the Panthers 4-3 in overtime in
Florida on Tuesday, March 23, 2004. Scott Niedermayer got the overtime
winner to make Martin Brodeur the youngest netminder to reach the 400 win
Brian Gionta blasted the puck at Roberto Luongo at 7:11 - Luongo
got most of it, but the puck trickled into the Panthers net to give the Devils
a 1-0 lead. Gionta's 20th goal of the season was assisted by Patrik
Elias and Scott Gomez.
Ex-Devil Lyle Odelein beat Martin Brodeur at 14:29 to tie the
game, 1-1. Recent ex-Devil Christian Berglund got the secondary assist
on the goal. Vaclav Nedorost beat Brodeur just 2:05 later to make it a
2-1 Panthers lead.
The Devils outshot the Panthers 11-10 in the first period, though
trailed 2-1 on the scoreboard.
Ex-Panther Viktor Kozlov roofed the puck over Luongo at 7:14 of
the second period to tie the game, 2-2. Kozlov's 13th goal of the season
was assisted by Jeff Friesen and Sean Brown.
The second period came to a close with the game tied, 2-2.
The Devils outshot the Panthers 13-7 in the period.
Lyle Odelein beat Brodeur through a screen at 4:43 of the third
period, on the power-play to give Florida a 3-2 lead.
Turner Stevenson put the puck past Luongo at 11:22 to tie the game
again. Stevenson's 13th goal of the season was assisted by Paul Martin
and Jan Hrdina.
Regulation time ended with the game still tied, 3-3. The
Devils outshot the Panthers 25-4 in the period.
Scott Niedermayer beat Luongo with just 1:05 remaining in the
overtime period to win the game for the Devils. Niedermayer's 12th goal
of the season was assisted by Patrik Elias and Scott Gomez.
The Devils outshot the Panthers 50-24 in the game.
With the victory, the Devils win the season series, 3-1.
The win also clinched a playoff spot for the Devils.
