March 11, 2004 Game 70: Devils Beat Blackhawks 6-4; Giroux Recalled
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, 6-4 in New
Jersey on Thursday, March 11, 2004.
Here are a few of my pictures
from the game.
Turner Stevenson got the Devils on the board at 7:26 of the first
period, beating Blackhawks netminder Michael Leighton with a power-play
goal. Scott Niedermayer and Paul Martin assisted on Stevenson's 12th
goal of the season.
Eric Nickulas beat Martin Brodeur with just 1:55 remaining in the
first period to tie the game. There was no other scoring in the period,
though the Devils outshot the Blackhawks 11-9.
Grant Marshall scored 3:54 into the second period to regain the
Devils lead. Jeff Friesen and Jan Hrdina assisted on Marshall's eighth
goal of the season. Hrdina's assist was his first point as a
Devil.
Turner Stevenson fought Jason Strudwick (at 5:32) and Grant
Marshall fought Jim Vandermeer (at 10:15), but the fights were not enough to
get Chicago fired up.
Sergei Brylin scored at 13:30 to give New Jersey a 3-1 lead over
the Hawks. Colin White and Jan Hrdina assisted on Brylin's 12th of the
season.
Just 32 seconds after Brylin's goal, John Madden beat Leighton to
pad the Devils lead to 3 goals. Madden's 10th goal of the season was
assisted by Jamie Langenbrunner and Scott Niedermayer.
Tuomo Ruutu beat Martin Brodeur with a power-play goal with just
29 seconds remaining in the second period.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Blackhawks,
4-2. Chicago outshot New Jersey 11-9 in the period.
Michal Barinka scored his first goal of the season, beating
Brodeur at 5:08 of the third period.
Patrik Elias beat Leighton with a great backhand shot, lifted
over the Blackhawks netminder at 11:52. Scott Gomez and Turner
Stevenson assisted on Elias' 32nd goal of the season.
Stevenson's assist gave him the completed "Gordie Howe Hat Trick"
- a Goal, an Assist, and a Fighting Major.
Tyler Arnason got the Blackhawks back to within 1 goal of the
Devils, beating Brodeur at 14:27 - but, they would not be able to tie the
game.
With just under 1 second remaining in regulation time, Turner
Stevenson unselfishly passed the puck to Patrik Elias for an empty net goal.
Stevenson was credited with the only assist on Elias' 2nd goal of the
game.
The game ended with the Devils defeating the Blackhawks, 6-4.
Chicago outshot New Jersey 15-8 in the third period and 35-28 in the
game.
With the victory, the Devils win the season series, 1-0-1.
Raymond Giroux skated with the Devils in the pre-game warmup, but
was scratched. He was recalled by the Devils earlier in the day.
Brian Gionta (face), Brian Rafalski (leg), Jiri Bicek (healthy),
and Raymond Giroux (healthy) were the Devils scratches.
