February 19, 2004 Game 59: Capitals & Kolzig Beat Devils, 3-1
The New Jersey Devils were defeated by the Capitals, 3-1 in
Washington on Thursday, February 19, 2004. Olaf Kolzig stopped 43 of 44
Devils shots.
There was no scoring, though many chances in the first period.
The Devils outshot the Capitals 15-10 in the first 20 minutes.
Mike Grier deflected a shot from Sergei Gonchar over Scott
Clemmensen at 6:46 of the second period to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead.
Patrik Elias lifted the puck over Olaf Kolzig at 14:27 with a
great backhand shot to tie the game, 1-1. Scott Gomez and Scott
Niedermayer assisted on Elias' 21st goal of the season.
Matt Pettinger beat Clemmensen on a Capitals power-play at 16:13
of the second period to give Washington a 2-1 lead. Ex-Devil Josef
Boumedienne assisted on the goal.
The second period ended with Washington leading, 2-1. The
Devils outshot the Capitals, 11-9 in the period.
Robert Lang beat Clemmensen at 4:00 of the third period to
increase the Capitals lead to 2 goals.
There was no additional scoring in the third period, the Capitals
defeated the Devils, 3-1. the Devils outshot the Capitals 18-7 in the
third period and 44-26 in the game.
The game was the last meeting between the teams in the 2003-2004
regular season. The Devils won the season series 2-1-1.
