January 20, 2004 Game 45: Devils Beat Pens: Clemmensen Posts 3-0 Shutout!
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Penguins 3-0 in Pittsburgh
on Tuesday, January 20, 2004. Scott Clemmensen posted a 3-0 shutout,
stopping 25 shots in his first career NHL start.
Turner Stevenson took a great pass from Friesen and pushed it past
Jean-Sebastien Aubin at 9:27 of the first period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.
Sergei Brylin also assisted on Stevenson's fourth goal of the
season.
The first period ended with the Penguins outshooting the Devils,
13-4, but with the Devils leading where it counts, 1-0.
Jeff Friesen beat Aubin with a nice shot at 2:13 into the second
period to increase the Devils lead to 2 goals. Friesen's ninth goal of
the season was assisted by Turner Stevenson and Brian Rafalski.
Turner Stevenson drilled the puck through Aubin at 16:53 of the
second to give the Devils a commanding 3-0 lead. Stevenson's second
goal of the game was unassisted.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Pens, 3-0.
The shots were even, 8-8 in the period.
There was no scoring in the third period. The Devils
outshot the Penguins, 7-4 in the third period, but were outshot 25-19 in the
game.
Martin Brodeur, who rarely sits out a game, in an even more rare
situation sat out a second consecutive game, this time with Scott Clemmensen
getting his first career NHL start. Corey Schwab was placed back on the
Injured Reserve list with a sore groin.
Friesen's goal in the second period was the 200th of his
career.
The Devils now lead the season series, 4-1. The teams will
meet once more in the regular season (March 17).
