The New Jersey Devils were defeated 4-2 at home by the struggling
Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday, January 7, 2004.
Mike Eastwood beat Martin Brodeur 10:38 into the first period to
give the Penguins a 1-0 lead.
With just 18 seconds remaining in the first period, Scott
Niedermayer accidently threw the puck at the net, and past Brodeur.
Niedermayer was being hounded by Matt Bradley, who was credited with the goal
for the Penguins.
The first period ended with the Penguins leading the Devils, 2-0.
The Devils outshot the Penguins, 8-6 in the period.
Ryan Malone puck the puck into a an open net at 7:58 of the
second period on the power-play to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead.
Scott Niedermayer roofed the puck over Jean-Sebastien Aubin at
15:42 of the second period on the power-play to cut the Penguins lead to 3-1.
Niedermayer's eighth goal of the season was assisted by Sergei Brylin
and Jeff Friesen.
The second period ended with Penguins leading the Devils, 3-1.
The Devils outshot the Pens 10-8 in the period.
Patrik Elias blasted the puck through Aubin at 2:39 of the third
period to cut the Penguins lead to one goal. Elias' thirteenth goal of
the season was assisted by Scott Gomez and Turner Stevenson.
Eric Meloche put the puck into an empty net with 20 seconds
remaining to seal the Pens win over the Devils.
The game ended with the Penguins defeating the Devils by a score
of 4-2. The Devils outshot the Pens 15-6 in the third period and 33-20
in the game.
Gomez recorded his 200th career NHL assist on Elias' goal.
The Devils lead the season series, 3-0. The teams will
meet two more times before the end of the season.
